Summer vacations: Reasons to do internships and how they help your career

Thoughts of summer bring forth images of lazy days indoors, getting glued to television, food, holiday and keeping a distance from studies. However, there are plenty of ways that one can have fun, relax and still be productive. After all, summer vacations are about taking the time to travel, explore, acquire and learn new things, augment skills and experience. I believe the best way to gain experience is to start turning your thoughts into actions.

This year my school gave all the students of my grade the opportunity to intern at many different companies. For 10 days in this summer break, I had the privilege to work and understand the cogs and wheels of the technology and engineering industry with my classmates.

summer holidays, summer internship, school, school internship, summer activities, summer vacations, internship, job experience, education news, indian express, delhi schools, noida newsThis internship gave me an insight into the actual working of an office. My mentors ensured that we made the most of our experience in the corporate world. We not only took part in the orientation programme but also were trained in HTML (HyperText Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) and basic JavaScript. We were even taught to design resumes and develop interpersonal skills that would help us in the future.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience which gave me an opportunity to explore my strengths and weaknesses and test my logical ability.

In my opinion, activities, like taking on internships, improving your skills, travelling, volunteering and taking part in small projects, are great ways to spend the summer holidays productively. The vacations are an opportunity to explore, experience and learn and I intend to make the most of this time.

DU admission 2017: Sharp drop in cut-offs at off campus colleges

Off-campus colleges in DU saw a significant drop in cut-off percentages in the second list released by the university on Friday night. PGDAV College, which had set the highest cut-off of 98% for Computer Science in the first list, saw a drop of 5% for the course in the second list. Several colleges such as Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Bhagini Nivedita College, BR Ambedkar College, Motilal Nehru College and PGDAV college saw cut-off percentages fall by a minimum 2% and, for some courses, even as high as 9%. Usually, due to the large number of applications that the university receives, the difference in cut-off percentages between the first and second list is not more than 1.5%.

In fact, many sought after courses and colleges closed applications after filling up the seats with the first cut-off itself — as is the case in Hindu College and LSR College this year. The drastic drop in off-campus college cut-offs may be attributed the fact that many of them are on the outskirts of Delhi and not well-connected to the Metro — making them relatively less popular among applicants. However, in some cases, the drop also has to do with the popularity of a certain course.

For less popular courses such as BA (Hons) Social Work, the college reduced cut-off from 88% to 80%. Similarly, in its BA Hindi Journalism course, the cut-off fell from 80% to 75%. Even for popular courses such as BA Programme and Geography, there has been a drop of 5% and 4% respectively.

At Bhagini Nivedita College, situated in Kair village near Najafgarh, cut-off for courses such as Political Science and History reduced by 4% and 3% respectively.

Science courses, too, saw the same trend. Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences in Dwarka saw cut-offs reduce by an average of 3%. Less common courses like Instrumentation (87%) and Polymer Science (87%) saw a drop of 5% each. Swami Shraddhanand College in Alipur saw a drop of 6% and 5% in Applied Life Sciences and Botany. Cut-offs for languages, especially Hindi, saw a drastic drop in many colleges.

Row over making Dyal Singh day college intensifies: Morning college principal claims he didn’t sign proposal

The faculty at Delhi University’s Dyal Singh morning and evening colleges have once again locked horns over the conversion of the evening college into a morning one. With DU’s executive council set to meet Monday, the principal of the morning college, I S Bakshi, has denied signing the agreement proposing and accepting the conversion.

delhi University quota, Delhi University news, National news, education news, latest news, delhi Univeristy news,In a staff council meeting on June 30, the morning college passed a resolution to “prevent the bifurcation of the colleges into two morning college, on the same premises”. They also alleged that the agreement, signed by the two principals on January 24, and sent to the academic council (AC) on June 20, was fraudulent.

“The principal of the day college has categorically denied of having signed any such document. This is a serious… attempt to fraudulently mislead the AC,” the resolution said. The staff council has requested the VC to not take cognizance of the January 24 document and conduct an enquiry. However, the evening college has asked Bakshi to lodge an FIR if the documents are false. “It is appalling that the principal is implying that his signature was forged. If so, we request them to approach police,” Bhawana Pandey, spokes- person, evening college, said.

Delhi University: 200 B.Com Programme students fail final-yr exam

In an apparent case of mass failure, around 200 students of B.Com Programme across various colleges of Delhi University (DU) have not cleared the final year exams. Students alleged that they had been “failed for not getting 40% marks in the practical exam of Computer Applications”. The students, led by the DU Students’ Union, also met the Dean of Students’ Welfare and wrote a letter on the issue. Deputy Dean of Students’ Welfare Gurpreet Tuteja said the letter had been forwarded to the Dean of Examinations Vinay Gupta for deliberation. Gupta did not respond to calls by The Sunday Express.

We were told by our teachers that getting 40% aggregate marks is enough… We were told to reappear for the Computer Applications paper only if we wanted to improve our marks,” Mohit Chawaria, a student of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (Evening), claimed.

“I scored 68%. As I did not get 16 out of 40 in my practical in fifth semester, they have failed me,” he added. Chawaria said he will miss out on an entire year and will be unable to sit for competitive exams or apply for postgraduate courses as a result.

Transgenders can now study all IGNOU courses for free

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has decided to give full fee waiver to transgender candidates — provided they produce an identity proof — on all programmes offered by the university. “The competent authority is pleased to approve fee exemption in all programmes for transgender candidates. Any certificate issued by the central/state government/medical officer/any other competent authority/ Aadhaar card, etc may be sought for the purpose,” the university said in a notification on June 29, signed by the Registrar of the Student Registration Division.

The university holds admissions twice a year for most of its degree, diploma and certificate courses. For its July session, admissions will close on July 31. IGNOU vice-chancellor Ravindra Kumar said he hoped the move would encourage more transgender students to apply for their programmes. Kumar, who made the announcement regarding the fee waiver during a lecture on Sunday, said the university had already received applications from around 100 transgenders.

transgenders, ignou course transgenders, trasngender rights, transgender free education, education news, indian express news“An NGO approached our Regional Director in Delhi last year for enrolling transgenders into our programmes, to give them some sense of respect. Once they take to some course in IGNOU, they feel elevated and slightly better because of their social status. If they take to education, their lot will improve substantially. So once the officials approached us, we welcomed (the idea). We had anyway opened these gates for them fairly early,” he said.

The university had introduced the ‘other’ gender category in their admission forms in 2012 — before transgenders were officially recognised as the third gender by the Supreme Court in 2014. Kumar said the decision was also taken because there was a demand from other regional centres such as Varanasi and Chennai for fee concession for transgender students. The university’s regional centre at Kochi had recently conducted a special orientation programme for transgender students.

Kumar said the document proof was being asked for only to keep away impostors. “There is a possibility that after hearing of the fee waiver, some people will declare themselves transgender. What mechanism will we have to check this? That’s why we’re asking for some proof to ascertain their gender,” he said. IGNOU is the largest open university in the country, and currently has over three million students enrolled in its 200-odd programmes.

DU’s online glitches unresolved, some prefer to turn up in person

From struggling to pay fees online to not being able to generate admission slips — students applying for courses at Delhi University have been facing a fair share of difficulties this season. To make their voices heard, aspirants and their parents Monday queued up outside the admission help desk office at the conference centre in north campus, asking the university to solve their problems.

Monday was the second day of admissions under the second cut-off list. “I do not know what the problem is but I could not find the college I wanted to take admission in. Not knowing what to do, I had to come here all the way. I have been told to submit an application, but I am worried now as Tuesday is the last day for admission under the second list,” said Abhinandan Shah, who wanted to take admission in Vivekananda College.

delhi university admissions, du online admission, du admissions, delhi univeristy, delhi university admission website, delhi news, indian express newsThe other common complaint was that students are not being able to log in to make online fee payment. Those who have paid have a different problem — not being able to generate the receipt. Students have to carry the fee receipt to get entry to the college on the first day. According to DU officials, of the 22,847 admissions approved, payment has been made for 19,000 seats. With 22,847 seats having been taken up, there are still 33,153 seats left in 61 colleges. However, colleges will be able to talk about the third cut-off once the admission is completed under the second list on Tuesday.

“Today (Monday), there were fewer students who came for admission. Just seeing the data till today, I think there will be no third list for BCom (Hons) general seats,” said Mallika Kumar, head of the commerce department at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). In other colleges, such as Ramjas, seats are filling up fast. Of the total 1,334 seats, 1,000 have already been filled.

At Gargi College, 1,100 out of 1,400 seats have been filled. “There will certainly be a third list, with some courses closed for the general category students. As there is still a day left for admission, and with students withdrawing to move to other colleges, a clear picture will emerge on Tuesday,” said an admission committee member of Ramjas College. The third cut-off list will be released on July 7.

Simple Ways To Make More Creative Design Templates

While many web designers go with the standard two or three column static, one-page site, you may want to spruce your own design template up to make your site stand out from the crowd. Everything from color and typography to grids and free design elements are available to help you create the most impressive design templates with ease. Follow these professional design tips you can easily make your template look better than your competitions without even using much added effort or resources.

Start With a Framework

The simplest way to create a powerful design template for your next website is to start with a robust framework. The best choice for websites on today’s web is a responsive grid framework such as the well-known Bootstrap framework. There are several other popular frameworks to build your website on including Base and Simple Grid. When you choose a great development framework, your design practically creates itself as you can focus on the aesthetics of your project and design for the mobile web.

Make Use of Vectors

Vector images are great for inclusion in any template design. You can save time by downloading free or premium vectors from places like Free Vector. Often times vector images can enhance the overall look and feel of your site while fulfilling essential menu and background and border image needs. Instead of creating your own menu button background image or templates, try using rectangular vector images with embellished borders.

Great Typography for Design Templates

While all of the textual content on your site won’t be included in your template, many aspects can be. These often include header and footer labels, menu buttons, navigation text and other core elements of your site. Try downloading a visually-stunning font to use throughout your template design. Google Fonts has hundreds of choices for web designers that will work well with any web browser. This is a vital tip for designers with WordPress hosting, as the standard fonts accessible through a WordPress install may leave you desiring more options.

Use Well Designed Icons

Many icon sets are available online ranging from free, such as those at Flat Icon, to a few bucks per dozen icons. Depending on your template’s needs you will likely find highly specific icons to match your future site’s content to a tee. Consider packaging a bundle of icons with your template design if you are selling your templates or have WordPress hosting and plan to make several websites. A great tip is to design your templates with room for interchangeable icons and upload customized, compressed icon packages to your host or let users download them as part of your template package file.

Color Blocking and Contrasting

Color blocking is an important part of design. Make sure to check your colors against the Complimentary Color Wheel to ensure the primary and secondary colors of your design match. Consider making multiple color schemes for your template, as users often prefer to have a simple way to test various themes across a single design template. Contrasting colors can draw attention to areas you want readers to focus on while improperly contrasted text can reduce readability on your site. Leave room for plenty of white space between content blocks so that you or future users of your template will have an easier time spacing content.

Professional Template Design Programs

Making your design template in the proper application can make a huge difference in your final product. Some of the most popular programs for designing website and app templates include Adobe Photoshop, Sketch for Mac computers, and illustrator. Fans of open-source design software may prefer GIMP which is a full-featured Photoshop alternative capable of making any desktop or mobile website template. Once you chosen your professional design application, consider downloading some template elements and barebones projects to give you a head start. By starting with a basic background and bordering you will be free to focus on the more important foreground objects in your final template.

There are also plugins and extensions available for each major design application. Try downloading some plugins for Photoshop or Sketch to automate tasks and add filters and features that don’t come standard with the software. Popular examples of these include filters for making retro and vintage designs, plugins to create special camera effects, and colorizing options that can help you bring a uniform design pattern to the photos and images used on your template.

By using these simple ways to enhance your design template and create more unique, inspiring designs, you will get results in terms of impressing visitors and establishing yourself as a master web designer. Make more creative templates simply by following these tips from design experts around the world and turn your website into a hub for creativity. Having a more creative design template will ensure your website and your client’s sites come across as professional and more artisan than the standard cookie-cutter, basic site templates used by many others.

PS4-Exclusive God of War Story and Release Date Revealed at E3 2017

PS4-exclusive God of War had a generous reveal at E3 2017. Not only did Sony show off a large chunk of gameplay, it also focussed on characters, bosses, and possible plot points.

Kratos’ son appears to be suffering from some kind of curse and he must embark with everyone’s favourite genocidal Greek on a journey that involves killing an assortment of monsters. God of War’s villain also makes an appearance, taunting Kratos, who is considered to be an outsider of the Norse realm wherein this game takes place.

God of War releases early 2018. Sony hasn’t given a concrete release date just yet. But if we take into account past releases in the franchise, you can expect it to be out in March. its unclear if the footage on display at the E3 2017 conference was on the PS4 or PS4 pro.

PS4-Exclusive God of War Story and Release Date Revealed at E3 2017With Sony releasing the PS4 Pro after God of War’s reveal — which the developers state was done on a standard PS4, there’s always the temptation for developers to optimise the game for the newer, more powerful platform that is the PS4 Pro at the cost of skimping out on the existing one, which in this case is the original PS4. However this will not be the case with God of War. Revealed at E3 2016 after a fairly accurate leak, it seems that the game will run just fine on a regular PS4.

Safe to say there will be some additional visual enhancements for the PS4 Pro, but the fact that Barlog has stated it will run as it should on the PS4 should have many a PS4 owner sighing in relief.
